‘The agave rug is a traditional style woven in our village. The agave symbol frames the whole rug with the eye of the feather snake pattern in the middle, surrounded by butterflies and moths of wisdom and love. The agave plant is the queen of all plants; it is the first fibre our ancestors used in textiles, it give us food (syrup) and a spiritual drink (Mezcal). In our language, the word for agave is Duúv, a word that sounds almost the same as Duuv, which means feather. That is how we see the agave, like a soft beautiful plant that gives us the gifts of the heavens and elevates our spirits towards the sky’

DIXZA RUGS ORGANIC FARM

The ancient way of weaving rugs in Teotitlan Del Valle, Oaxaca, is with a deep respect of the natural and spiritual world, with natural dyes and fibres, powered by muscle and firewood from renewable resources.

In this village is Dixza Rugs Organic Farm, home to an indigenous Benizaa family: Mario Bautista Martínez and Leonar Lazo González and their two sons Samuel Bautista Lazo and Celestino Bautista Lazo. The family are keeping the millenary weaving tradition alive, farming the land of their ancestors in a sustainable way and sharing the skills and knowledge of their culture through demonstrations and workshops.

‘When you buy one of our rugs, you are not just buying an object; you are bringing a piece of Zapotec woven tradition to your home. We share with you 10,000 years of know how, ancient stories and teachings that our ancestors have passed down from generation to generation in our oral tradition and weaving heritage’
