I've always come back to the work of Bryan Schutmaat. 

There's something eerily fascinating about his portrayal of the hard-working characters in his book "Grays the mountain sends". Contrasting vastly desolate landscape shots with raw portraits Schutmaat evokes an emotion with every large format image.
