ABOUT
Designer + maker Ali Goodman is the founder of Francli Craftwear. She has been working with leather for over 10 years with a practice rooted in the joy of handcraft and value of material provenance.
The Francli workshop is renowned for minimal and beautiful utility goods inspired by their stunning coastal landscape. Making canvas and leather bags that are crafted with care, chosen with consideration and used for a lifetime.
This workshop is designed for somebody with no prior experience in leatherwork. You will be guided through the process of making The Ramblers Pocket, a signature Francli design. Along the way, Ali will share her experience of working and designing with leather, including hide selection, the tanning process, and her design philosophy.
ABOUT FALMOUTH
The Southwest coastal town of Falmouth is a source of inspiration for artists, makers, musicians, sailors and boatbuilders. A place to find solace, sanctuary and escape among the inlets and creeks of the Fal estuary and the coves and cliffs of the dramatic Cornish coastline.
With a pretty, historical town centre that has an open, laid back vibe, it is a popular destination to discover artistic boutiques, independent breweries, curious vintage shops and delicious local food.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR WORKSHOP
3 days tuition with Ali Goodman
All of the leather and metal hardware are included in the fee
Seasonal workshop lunch on all days (we will be in touch to confirm dietary requirements)
Plentiful tea, coffee and water while you work
There are 4 places on each 3-day workshop, accommodation is not included
Ahead of the workshop you will select your leather colour from a choice of Black, Conker or Russet. Your leather components will be pre-cut and your choice of a 10mm stud strap or 22mm buckle strap will be pre-assembled.
ITINERARY
Day 1
Friday 09:30 – 16:30
Introductory talk with Ali in the studio. Although your pieces and straps are pre-cut, Ali will cover cutting techniques for different leathers.
Skills:
Cutting + bevelling using different knives, stamps and techniques
Bevelling, sanding, polishing + waxing edges
Grooving + skiving components
Glueing
Day 2
Saturday 09:30 – 16:30
Another full day of making
Skills:
Saddle stitching
Leather hole punching + rivet pressing
Wet moulding + glueing
Day 3
Sunday 09:30 – 16:00
Skills:
Hole punching + saddle stitching
Bevelling, sanding, polishing + waxing edges
Attaching your strap
