NOTES FROM THE WORKSHOP | SEPTEMBER

‘The goal of life is rapture. Art is the way we experience it’ - Joseph Campbell

Art is how we explore and express our place in the world. Our conversation with the land, what came before us and what we hope to come.

It’s how a design project can journey the connection from soil and food to fashion. How brass jewellery can sing about feminine and motherhood. And a personal memoir can dance with poetry and legends of the sea to evoke what it means to be human.

And then there's the magic that happens when a process of making is shared. Working side by side, hands and thoughts moving together.

Our cultural history has been written by communal art and craft traditions, shaping our world in ways large and small. From the rhythm and storytelling of Scottish wool waulking to bridging Eastern and Western philosophies over working clay together.

This is why we're very excited to share a workshop series of 'Leather, Brass and Bristles' in collaboration with makers Aquila Dunford and Ellie Birkhead in the converted cattle barn at Argal Home Farm.

To share why we love making with natural materials and the meaning we discover in it.

Enjoy our inspiration below.

With lots of love from Argal Home Farm,

What’s inspired us this month

Creative Independent

A vast archive of powerful conversations. Emotional and practical guidance for creative people. A reassuring hand for when you're feeling creatively adrift.

Equator Institute

Historical documentation of visual anthropology, art, architecture, human activities, and movements in our environment from all around the world.

Beautiful and humbling.

Salt On Your Tongue

“If you are near the sea, you hear it. The sea is loud, and it is always. The sound of its waves never stop their shushing and cracking on shingle and sand. The sea is eternally percussive, a natural heartbeat. Children are taught to listen out for the sound with a conch held up to the ear.”

A lyrical exploration of the sea by Charlotte Runcie.

Field, Fork, Fashion

A journey to find a future for leather by fashion designer Alice Robinson. Reminding us of the often-forgotten origins between farm, food and fashion.

The Wool Waulking Song

Filmed in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland 1941. The singing tradition of wool waulking to cleanse and strengthen the cloth.

Bernard Leach in His Workshop, 1952

'It's been often remarked to me both here and especially in the east, how few people today make patterns. And how many used to make them in the past as they made folk songs, folk dances...'
